Stone Patio

When it comes to hardscaping your backyard oasis, few projects offer the timeless charm and durability of a real stone patio. Whether you’re envisioning a cozy retreat or an elegant entertaining area, a well-executed stone patio can become the centerpiece of your outdoor living space. In this guide, we’ll walk you through two popular methods for installing a real stone patio: sand-set and mortar set, both requiring a sturdy concrete base.

Sand-Set Stone Patio Installation:

  1. Prepare the Base: Begin by excavating the area to a depth of 6-8 inches, ensuring a slight slope away from your home for proper drainage. Compact the soil thoroughly and add a layer of crushed gravel or class-5 aggregate, compacting it in 2-3 inch layers until you achieve a solid, level base.
  2. Install the Concrete Base: Pour and level a 2-3 inch thick layer of concrete over the compacted base. Allow the concrete to cure according to manufacturer’s instructions before proceeding.
  3. Lay the Bedding Sand: Once the concrete base has cured, spread a layer of bedding sand evenly across the surface, using a screed board to achieve a consistent thickness of about 1 inch.
  4. Place the Stones: Carefully lay the stones onto the sand bed, positioning them closely together to minimize gaps. Use a rubber mallet to tap each stone into place, ensuring they are level and securely seated.
  5. Fill the Joints: After all the stones are in place, fill the joints between them with polymeric sand. Sweep the excess sand off the surface and mist the patio lightly with water to activate the binding agents in the sand.
  6. Seal and Enjoy: Consider applying a sealer specifically designed for natural stone to protect your patio from moisture and stains. Once the sealer has dried, your sand-set stone patio is ready to enjoy!

Mortar Set Stone Patio Installation:

  1. Prepare the Base: Follow steps 1 and 2 from the sand-set installation method to excavate, compact, and pour the concrete base for your patio.
  2. Mix and Apply Mortar: Mix mortar according to manufacturer’s instructions, then spread a layer onto the concrete base using a trowel.
  3. Set the Stones: Carefully place each stone into the mortar bed, pressing down firmly to ensure proper adhesion. Use a level to check for evenness and adjust as needed.
  4. Fill the Joints: Once all the stones are in place, fill the joints between them with mortar mix, using a pointing trowel to press the mortar into the gaps.
  5. Smooth and Clean: After the mortar has set for about 30 minutes, use a damp sponge to smooth the joints and remove any excess mortar from the surface of the stones.
  6. Final Touches: Allow the mortar to cure for 24-48 hours before walking on the patio or applying any heavy loads. Consider applying a sealer to protect your mortar set stone patio and enhance its appearance.

With these step-by-step instructions, you can confidently tackle the installation of a real stone patio using either the sand-set or mortar set method. Whichever technique you choose, your new hardscaping feature is sure to enhance the beauty and functionality of your outdoor living space for years to come.
